The government has published a Commons Library standard note on zero-hours contracts, covering issues such as whether persons working under such contracts are classed as "employees" or "workers" and whether the employer is required to pay workers whilst they are on-call.
The note also covers the Zero Hours Contract Bill, a Private Members' Bill that seeks to prohibit the use of zero-hours contracts. The bill was presented to Parliament in June, and is due to have its second reading on 24 January 2014.
