The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has seen a drastic increase in the number of complaints about potential data breaches since the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) came into force in May 2018. According to law firm EMW, the ICO saw a 160% increase in the number of complaints received from 25 May 2018 to 3 July 2018 compared to the same period in 2017. The figures show that over a quarter of complaints were made against firms holding sensitive information in industries such as financial services, education and health. EMW attributes this rise to an increase in public awareness of rights due to the widely publicised introduction of the GDPR.
